Bowl season is finally upon us! We’ll bring you previews of all bowl 34 games in segments beginning with this one featuring the bowls from December 19-20, 2009. Some good match-ups will be showcased in the first part of bowl season. Lets go bowling!
NEW MEXICO BOWL
Saturday, December 19
ESPN at 4:30 PM ET
Fresno St. vs Wyoming
Fresno St. comes in with the nation’s leading rusher Ryan Mathews. Wyoming struggles against the run so this is not a good combination for the Cowboys.
Wyoming has a great playmaker at QB in Austyn Carta-Samuels. He won Freshman of the Year in the Mountain West and these practices preparing for the bowl will be very valuable next season.
Fresno lost this bowl game last year so they want that changed this year. They’ll keep feeding Mathews the ball and this one won’t be in doubt.
THE PICK: FRESNO ST. 34, WYOMING 20
ST. PETERSBURG BOWL
Central Florida (8-4) vs. Rutgers (8-4)
ESPN at 8 PM ET
This game should be a good one as the Knights face the Scarlet Knights. Both have strong defenses and so-so offenses. I think UCF has the better defense has they’re the fourth best against the run and average three sacks a game which is fifth best. Rutgers does lead the nation in turnover margin. I look for the defenses to control this game and make turnovers to set-up the scoring opportunities for the offenses. The Knights get a late Field Goal to win.
THE PICK: UCF 20, RUTGERS 17
NEW ORLEANS BOWL
Southern Mississippi (7-5) vs. Middle Tennessee State (9-3)
December 20
ESPN at 8:30 PM ET
Southern Miss has Damion Fletcher, the active career rushing leader in the FBS. MTSU has won six straight behind great play of QB Dwight Dasher who averaged nearly 300 yards a game. Playing at the home of the Saints, I look for the scoreboard to get a workout like the home team gives it.
THE PICK: Middle Tennessee State 41, Southern Miss 31
