Time for our first NFL Power Rankings as training camps get started across the league. We’ll be back at the end of the preseason to start our weekly release of power rankings for all 32 NFL teams.
1. New Orleans Saints - They’re the defending champs and return intact.
2. New York Jets – Made some big moves in the offseason and if they can gel, this will be the team to beat.
3. Minnesota Vikings – Turnovers doomed them in the NFC Championship game last year. If Favre returns to play like he did last year, they’ll be in the same position.
4. Indianapolis Colts – As long as Peyton Manning is on the field the Colts are gonna be tough to beat.
5. Baltimore Ravens – Picking up Anquan Boldin gives them the offensive threat they’ve lacked for years. The question is Ed Reed’s health.
6. Dallas Cowboys – A very talented team but I think the spotlight is too big in Dallas for most of their players.
7. San Diego Chargers – No LT and Vincent Jackson misses the first few weeks.
8. Green Bay Packers – The Packers defense has to step up and help out one of the best offenses in the league if they want to contend.
9. Cincinnati Bengals – The Bengals improved their division winner squad from last year.
10. New England Patriots - A lot of questions in New England this year. What will Randy Moss do in a contract year? Is Wes Welker back to 100%? Will the Tom Brady contract situation be a distraction?
11. Atlanta Falcons – Michael Turner could make this a team to be reckoned with all year.
12. San Francisco 49ers – If Alex Smith picks up where he left off last year, the Niners will be in the playoffs.
13. Tennessee Titans – Kyle Vandenbosch and Keith Bullock are gone so the offense might need to score a little more than it has in the past to win.
14. Houston Texans – Can they get over the hump and become a playoff team this year? It rests on Matt Schaub.
15. Miami Dolphins – Picking up Brandon Marshall should be huge for the offense. A tough division though will keep them out of the playoffs.
16. Philadelphia Eagles – It’s Kevin Kolb’s show now. I think it’s a transition year for the Eagles but next year they’re going to be contenders.
17. Oakland Raiders – With a solid QB now in Jason Campbell, the Raiders could be back in the playoffs.
18. New York Giants – The Giants need players to step up this year if they want to compete in the NFC East.
19. Kansas City Chiefs – Thomas Jones was a huge pick up and pairing him with Jamaal Charles could be the best RB tandem in the league.
20. Pittsburgh Steelers – No Big Ben for up to six weeks to start the season.
21. Arizona Cardinals – Matt Leinart is the key to the season. The loss of Karlos Dansby on defense is huge.
22. Washington Redskins – A team that improved in the offseason yet still lacks enough playmakers to challenge for a playoff spot.
23. Chicago Bears – What does the combo of Mike Martz and Jay Cutler come up with this year?
24. Carolina Panthers – Jake Delhomme and Julius Peppers are gone. They’ll still have a good running game though.
25. Jacksonville Jaguars – Same story in Jacksonville this year. They need to get some big plays down field in the passing game to be successful.
26. Cleveland Browns – Is it Jake Delhomme’s team or will Colt McCoy see action?
27. Denver Broncos - Struggled down the stretch and with no Brandon Marshall, they’re gonna have a long year.
28. Detroit Lions - Should play better than the past couple of years but still will have growing pains
29. Buffalo Bills – It’ll be interesting to see what Chan Gailey does with rookie C.J. Spiller and if he can get steady play from Trent Edwards.
30. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – This team just needs a lot more talent.
31. Seattle Seahawks – Can Pete Carroll get this team back in contention? They’ve got a lot of holes to fill.
32. St. Louis Rams - A team lacking talent looks headed for the top pick in the draft again next year.
